Behind the Scenes

Charity video training at All We Can

We’ve been running charity video training courses for many years now and have run several courses at CAFOD, Macmillan, Mission Aviation Fellowship and most recently at All We Can.

Filming communities in Ethiopia

Wrapping my scarf around my neck and zipping up my jacket, I prepared to wander across the compound to meet up with the rest of the team to discuss tomorrow’s filming. Only – this was not now in the UK at the start of December, but the first day on location in Ethiopia! I was prepared for the evenings to be a bit cooler – but this was positively cold!

Almost over...

I can hardly believe it is almost time for me to go back home. These six weeks could not have gone by faster. Anyhow, as I look back on my time interning at Purple Flame, so much has happened. I have been able to be a part of all aspects of the organisation and along with that, I have learned so many valuable things. When you are an undergraduate student, you are presented with so many options; they make you feel as if the sky is the limit in terms of career options, and it is, but that also makes it very complex and confusing.

Charity Video Production Guide

Over the past 14 years that we’ve been working with charity clients in producing fundraising, educational and legacy videos, we’ve found it useful to outline the process that we go through to producing a film. Clear communication and good early planning are vital in ensuring that the best possible footage is obtained and that the final film fulfils the charity’s brief – delivering a strong and engaging message and a clear ask.

Inclusion of Elders into Society

Last Sunday I had the opportunity to assist Phil in filming for Contact The Elderly. Contact The Elderly is a charity that focuses on tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. They organise Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and over who live alone with little or no support from family or friends. The filming consisted creating an overview of the Sunday tea parties and looking at why the event is so important for the guests, as well as for the volunteers.

Purple Flame's new Panamanian intern...

My name is Mona Lisa Garcia, I am from Panama, and this is my first week as an intern in Purple Flame. One would think that three days is not a long time, yet I would have never expected to learn so much in such a short amount of time. I am a junior student from Villanova University double majoring in Cultural Studies and Communication, specialising in Media Production. I wanted to study abroad in London for a variety of reasons, but I also wanted to get a sense of how things are done here in the UK, especially in the film industry.

World Aims - 48 hrs to make a film!

Camera - check. Lens - check. Microphones - check.

And.....Go!

It felt as if someone had fired a starting gun - once again I was in Truro to film the World AIMS week at the local school. World AIMS (Action In Methodist Schools) encourages schools to engage in issues impacting our world - this week Truro was looking at "Reduce, reuse and recycle". Purple Flame had been commissioned to film this event over the two days and then have a film ready to play out the following morning! No pressure then...

Purple Flame goes volunteering

Purple Flame has been working within the charity sector for over 14 years and over this period we've been involved in supporting our clients in a range of ways - from volunteering on a building site with Habitat for Humanity and jumping out of planes on a sponsored skydive for Asphaleia through to some pro bono work for a local small refugee charity. Recently, I've been challenged by the idea of volunteering on a more regular basis and have been looking at what's available locally.

Energising the team

One of the things I've developed over the years is a love for great coffee - it seems to be a common factor amongst creatives! We've just taken delivery of a new coffee machine and it's certainly worsened my geeky interest in the process and methods of making coffee - I've become obsessed with how fine the grind is, extraction times and all manner of little tweaks to improve the quality of the expresso!
