history:

Research into the film first began in August 2003 - Ray Tostevin and Phil Knox were in Rwanda at the time of the first presidential elections since the 1994 genocide on a filming trip with Tearfund's Transform teams. The numerous stories they came across that ran the range of hope to despair started them thinking about ways of expressing this in a longer film.

October 2003, and the team had been put in contact with Lesley Bilinda, and started to hear something of her powerful story. A positive meeting with Lesley in Edinburgh, led on to some interviews on-camera at her sister's house in the centre of the city. Whilst apprehensive at the thought of returning, Lesley had a strong desire to be able to draw a line under her previous harrowing experiences and 'move on'.

Further research led to a short investigative trip for the crew in January 2004. This was to look into a couple of issues, visit and get a feel for some of the places we were planning to film with Lesley and to work out the various practicalities and legalities of filming there. This led to the production of a short promo which went out to interested broadcast commisioners.
